The society achieved chartered status this month and is now called the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).  The main aims of becoming chartered are to promote good editing and to raise the value and standing of the profession.

Paul retires as Finance Director

After two  years as Finance Director of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, I have relinquished my role.

It has been an enjoyable time with many trips backwards and forwards to our admin office in Putney, getting to know the team and lots of time back home spent on online forums.  I will miss the camaraderie with my fellow directors and staff.

Paul Churchouse, Professional ProofreaderI am a trained freelance proofreader living in Danbury, near Chelmsford in Essex.  I am a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and am bound by their Code of Practice, ensuring editorial excellence.  I was the CIEP’s Finance Director from 2014 to 2016.

All types of proofreading considered, for example:

Paul becomes SfEP Finance Director

sfep - Society for Editors and ProofreadersAt the Annual General Meeting of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders at the beginning of September, I was delighted to be elected as the new Finance Director.  I am really looking forward to being more involved with the Society.  I have already visited the office in Putney, it seems I am one of the most local Directors to the office – my co-Directors come from all around the UK.

In May 2014 I was interviewed for the second time on Sarah Banham’s weekly radio show, ‘Writer’s Block’, Saint FM 94.7 based in Maldon, Essex to talk about proofreading. Sarah is a writer and publisher and has written seven books, including novels and anthologies. She also runs workshops for budding writers.

In May 2012 I appeared on the radio to talk about proofreading with Malcolm Brown, a local poet, on Sarah Banham’s weekly radio show, ‘Writer’s Block’, Saint FM 94.7 based in Maldon, Essex.

Malcolm Brown is an author and photographer and recently had a book of poems published titled ‘Whispers in the reeds’.

Malcolm comments: Paul proofread my poetry book prior to publishing and he did a great job. He had a friendly and relaxed approach when dealing with my work and was thoroughly professional and proactive during the process, taking into account the complexities of proofreading for grammar especially where poetry is concerned.
