What is Proofreading?

Proofreading is the quality check and tidy-up.

After a text has been copy-edited and has been through the design and typesetting stages, a proof is produced which is the final paper or on screen version that is almost ready for publication.

A proofreader looks for consistency in usage and presentation and accuracy in text, images and layout. He uses care, judgement, skill, knowledge and experience in checking that the work of the author/designer/typesetter is satisfactory, making amendments where necessary with the aim of producing a final version that the client is happy with.

A professional proofreader will check for the following (although this list is not exhaustive):

  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Content and layout
  • Page headings and numbers
  • Word, column and page breaks
  • Style consistency
  • Illustrations, captions and labels
  • Cross-references

He will liaise with the author to resolve problems and queries. However, he will not copy-edit, rewrite or restructure text in any way.
